SUMMARY:Theology with a Twist: Mainline Protestant Music & Our Nation’s Shifting Religious & Sociopolitical Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 5th\, 2026 7:00 pm\nKutztown Tavern\, 272 W Main St Kutztown \nJoin Dr. Deborah Justice\, author of “(White)Washing Our Sins Away: American Mainline Churches\, Music\, Power\, and Diversity”\, for a discussion of how your worship music options reflect and shape how you relate to the divine and fellow humans. How do our musical choices in worship reflect our values? How do these choices shape our values? Everything from the type of musical instruments we use to employing hymnals vs projected lyrics creates a worship culture. My research has isolated three areas impacted by musical choices in worship: the sacred\, the sonic\, and the social. \nDr. Justice is an ethnomusicologist who studied and researched at Wesleyan University\, Indiana University\, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music\, and Syracuse University. Dr. Justice’s career shifted to university concert management\, beginning at Cornell University and moving to Kutztown’s concert series last year. She spends most of her time running around after her young son and two cats. \nThis will be our last Theology with a Twist for the season. We will begin our next season on Tuesday October 6

SUMMARY:Spirit on Tap: The Afterlife in the Hebrew-Greek Scriptures - Calvary UCC\, Reading
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Harry L. Serio \nJudaism and Christianity are syncretistic religions that\, in their formative stages\, were influenced by surrounding cultures\, particularly those of Sumer\, Egypt\, Persia and Greece. The development and evolution of Biblical concepts of the Afterlife present a blending of various thoughts and philosophies. Our understanding of the Hereafter is dependent ipon the revelation of God to many persons in many cultures\, ages\, and religious expressions\, and this revelation is a continuing and evolving process. As Pilgrim leader John Robinson said\, “God hath more truth and light to break forth from his Holy Word. \nSpirit on Tap’s purpose is to encourage theological discussion\, explore alternative views\, and stimulate dialouge around issues of faith\, spirituality\, and social justice. There is no charge\, and all are welcome. Spirit on Tap is supported by your generous donations. \n

SUMMARY:Spirit on Tap: "Reasonable Thinking"
DESCRIPTION:Reasonable Thinking with Haydn McLean \n“Ha Ha! Fooled Myself! Tripping Over Our Cognitive Biases” \nOur minds don’t mean to\, but they play tricks on us. Our minds want to make sense of the world and see patterns\, sometimes where patterns don’t exist. However\, that doesn’t mean we can’t make patterns where the don’t exist. Sometimes we prefer the wrong information to no information. Failing to recognize our own biases is a bias. Ignoring the obvious is called the ostrich effect\, but it is also known as willful blindness and\, in one case\, had disastrous consequences. Does past history predict future success or failure? How does the survivorship bias shape how we view our lives? Has the fundamental attribution error shaped our assessment of ourselves or others? \nParticipants will receive a copy of “Twenty Cognitive Biases That Screw Up Our Decisions.” Also available\, upon request and via email\, are “Three Untrue Christian Cliches You’ve Probably Used (But Shouldn’t)\,” Rolf Dobelli’s “The Art of Thinking Clearly\,” and Elizabeth Kolbert’s “Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds.” \nHaydn McLean is a former pastor and a retired hospital chaplain\, having worked at the Lancaster General Hospital\, the Hershey Medical Center\, and the Reading Hospital. A graduate of Lycoming College and Lancaster Theological Seminary\, he has offered conflict resolution and is the author of several articles in a variety of periodicals. He and his wife reside in New Holland\, Lancaster County. \nSpirit on Tap’s purpose is to encourage theological discussion\, explore alternative views\, and stimulate dialouge around issues of faith\, spirituality\, and social justice. There is no charge\, and all are welcome. Spirit on Tap is supported by your generous donations.

SUMMARY:Theology with a Twist: "From Her Own Means: The Women Who Bankrolled the Gospel"
DESCRIPTION:As those who lead churches today know\, the economic life of a church is as necessary to sustain as its spiritual life. The early Jesus movement and Paul’s groups also required material sustenance to operate. How did these groups support themselves financially? If we look closely\, there are several women who are named in our New Testament sources as financial sponsors of the Gospel: Phoebe\, Lydia\, Mary Magdalene\, Susanna\, and others. Join us as we dig into the ways women appear\, again and again\, across early Christian writings as the primary investors in the Gospel. \nDr. Brigidda Zapata is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Moravian Theological Seminary. She holds a BA\, MA\, and PhD from the University of Toronto. Her research examines how people in the ancient world understood the divine to permeate into everyday life. Recently\, she has been writing about the role of New Testament women in ritual life\, both as participants and sponsors. \nTheology with a Twist meets at the Kutztown Tavern at 272 W Main St\, Kutztown\, PA 19530. We gather in the upper room of the tavern the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm for a time of learning and discussion about a variety of spiritual\, religious\, and theological topics presented by local experts in their field. The event is free but food and drink can be purchased in the restaurant downstairs and brought up to our event space. Parking is available in the community lot behind the tavern or on Main Street. All are welcome!
