DESCRIPTION:Reasonable Thinking with Haydn McLean \n“Ha Ha! Fooled Myself! Tripping Over Our Cognitive Biases” \nOur minds don’t mean to\, but they play tricks on us. Our minds want to make sense of the world and see patterns\, sometimes where patterns don’t exist. However\, that doesn’t mean we can’t make patterns where the don’t exist. Sometimes we prefer the wrong information to no information. Failing to recognize our own biases is a bias. Ignoring the obvious is called the ostrich effect\, but it is also known as willful blindness and\, in one case\, had disastrous consequences. Does past history predict future success or failure? How does the survivorship bias shape how we view our lives? Has the fundamental attribution error shaped our assessment of ourselves or others? \nParticipants will receive a copy of “Twenty Cognitive Biases That Screw Up Our Decisions.” Also available\, upon request and via email\, are “Three Untrue Christian Cliches You’ve Probably Used (But Shouldn’t)\,” Rolf Dobelli’s “The Art of Thinking Clearly\,” and Elizabeth Kolbert’s “Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds.” \nHaydn McLean is a former pastor and a retired hospital chaplain\, having worked at the Lancaster General Hospital\, the Hershey Medical Center\, and the Reading Hospital. A graduate of Lycoming College and Lancaster Theological Seminary\, he has offered conflict resolution and is the author of several articles in a variety of periodicals. She spent four decades in the work of faith-based liberal arts education as a professor\, residential life director\, chief academic officer\, and president. Dr. Mullen wrote the 2024 book Claiming the Courageous Middle: Daring to Live and Work Together for a More Hopeful Future\, published by Baker Academic. In that text she sets out an argument for how to step into the courageous place of “the middle” – her phrasing for “Catching a Vision for a Third Way of Being in the World” (Chapter 1). She focuses on the challenges of finding a third or middle way in the midst of today’s culture wars and pays careful attention to how to do this faithfully\, reflecting often on her own Wesleyan background. Dr. Mullen is very excited to join us and engage in complex\, challenging\, and important conversations about finding our way forward in these days. SUMMARY:The Spirit of Religious and Civic Freedom in the Revolutionary Era
DESCRIPTION:“The Spirit of Religious and Civic Freedom in the Revolutionary Era.” \nwith Dr. Randall Zachman \nTuesdays\, April 21\, 28\, and May 5\, from 7-8:15 p.m. on Zoom. \nThis three-week series will explore the ways the quest for religious freedom influenced the pursuit of civic freedom during the revolutionary era in the American colonies. We will begin by looking at the arguments for religious freedom in Roger Williams and William Penn\, over against the involvement of the state in religious life during their times. We will then turn to the ways in which religious and civic freedom were seen to be inseparable in the sermons of Jonathan Mayhew and John Witherspoon\, so that a nation cannot have one without the other. We will conclude by hearing from the first four US presidents regarding their conviction that the constitutional project of civic freedom can only succeed if the American people remain both moral and religious\, without the government sponsoring religion. Short selections of primary source readings will be provided for each session. \nThere is no registration fee\, but you must register to receive the Zoom link for the series. \nThis series will have suggested reading between sessions. \nThis series will be counted as 6 hours of Continuing Education for authorized ministers in the Keystone Conference.

DESCRIPTION:Who is God calling you and your church to be? This online workshop will help us name together how God is calling us in these times\, and reflect on the relationships that exist within your congregation. This includes relationships between congregants\, pastor\, and church leadership. We will explore ways in which healthy boundaries and healthy communication practices can enhance your church’s work and witness to the world. \nRev. Tara Barber has been serving as your Minister for Ministerial Support and Accountability for six years. She comes to this work as a lifelong Pacific NW UCCer\, camper\, and engaged lay leader\, who participated in wider church ministries as a teenager and young adult\, and later as a Youth Leader and companion to older adults. Ordained in 2001\, she served as an Associate Pastor in Northern California and co-pastor in the Pacific NW\, before turning her focus back to the wider church\, working with COMs\, developing a COP program\, teaching Boundary Trainings and consulting around Intercultural Compassion locally and beyond the PNC. Serio \nJudaism and Christianity are syncretistic religions that\, in their formative stages\, were influenced by surrounding cultures\, particularly those of Sumer\, Egypt\, Persia and Greece. The development and evolution of Biblical concepts of the Afterlife present a blending of various thoughts and philosophies. Our understanding of the Hereafter is dependent ipon the revelation of God to many persons in many cultures\, ages\, and religious expressions\, and this revelation is a continuing and evolving process. As Pilgrim leader John Robinson said\, “God hath more truth and light to break forth from his Holy Word. \nSpirit on Tap’s purpose is to encourage theological discussion\, explore alternative views\, and stimulate dialouge around issues of faith\, spirituality\, and social justice.
