Guest Speaker: Dr. Shirley Mullen
Shirley Mullen, PhD served as the president of Houghton College for 15 years. She spent four decades in the work of faith-based liberal arts education as a professor, residential life director, chief academic officer, and president. Dr. Mullen wrote the 2024 book Claiming the Courageous Middle: Daring to Live and Work Together for a More Hopeful Future, published by Baker Academic. In that text she sets out an argument for how to step into the courageous place of “the middle” – her phrasing for “Catching a Vision for a Third Way of Being in the World” (Chapter 1). She focuses on the challenges of finding a third or middle way in the midst of today’s culture wars and pays careful attention to how to do this faithfully, reflecting often on her own Wesleyan background. Dr. Mullen is very excited to join us and engage in complex, challenging, and important conversations about finding our way forward in these days. We hope to see you there!
